The Emissaries for Sustainability (EoS) project reached a significant milestone with its first onsite teacher training, held from May 26–30, 2025, in Argostoli, Kefalonia, Greece. Hosted by the Directorate of Secondary Education of Kefallinia, the training focused on the theme:
“Sustainability and Gender Equality – Creating Sustainable, Inclusive, and Creative Women Leaders.”
This week-long event brought together educators and partners from across Europe to collaborate, learn, and engage in environmental and leadership-oriented education, advancing the project’s mission to build future-ready, inclusive school communities.
🏛 A Dynamic Start
The training opened with a warm welcome at the Argostoli Municipal Council, followed by interactive icebreaking sessions and a scenic walk through the Koutavos Wetland, allowing participants to connect with both each other and the local natural environment.
📘 Thematic Sessions and Leadership Development
Each day featured intensive workshops and presentations led by different project partners:
- Day 2 (Powiślański University, PL): Explored the foundations of sustainability, gender equality, and climate change. The evening featured a cultural and ecological excursion to Ainos Mountain National Park, followed by dinner at a local taverna.
- Day 3 (BAUR, BG): Focused on leadership for sustainable change and the power of storytelling in education and activism. A highlight of the day was an official visit to the Deputy Regional Governor of Kefalonia and Ithaca, emphasizing the role of governance in sustainability.
- Day 4 (Higher School of Transport, BG): Covered community engagement, energy efficiency, and climate neutrality. Participants received certificates of attendance, followed by a celebratory barbecue in Lassi, set against a picturesque coastal backdrop.
- Day 5 (Sucessos Criativos, PT): Concluded with interactive sessions on design thinking and social entrepreneurship, helping educators build actionable sustainability plans tailored to their school communities.
🌍 Cultural Exchange and Lasting Impact
Beyond structured sessions, the training fostered strong intercultural bonds, providing space for educators to exchange experiences and approaches. Field visits, shared meals, and regional exploration highlighted the importance of community, culture, and collaboration in sustainable development.
🎯 Looking Ahead
This successful training in Kefalonia energized the consortium for upcoming phases of the EoS project. Educators left equipped with practical tools, strategic insights, and a renewed commitment to fostering sustainability and gender equity in education.
The next in-person training is scheduled for September 2025 in Sofia, Bulgaria, where participants will further develop and implement the action plans initiated in Greece.
